On 15th April, 1915, the 3rd Middlesex battalion of 85 Brigade, 28th Division, moved into trenches near St Jean in the northern part of the Ypres salient where they remained until relieved on 18th April. Enemy activity, particularly artillery fire, was building up during their time here as the Germans prepared to launch a large offensive later in the month and 3rd Middlesex sustained a number of casualties.

Frederick Chitty died  on 21st April but it is not known if he died from wounds or from illness, both of which took their toll of the men on the Western Front.
